Accessibility

Clearbyte is meant to be usable by every student in a course, including students who use a screen reader, a keyboard only, or other assistive technology.

1. Standard

Clearbyte aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA for the www.clearbyte.com website and for the pages students use in the lab platform.

A review of the lab platform with automated testing tools, keyboard-only use and a screen reader is planned. An Accessibility Conformance Report (VPAT) will be available on request once it is complete.

2. What is in place

The student lab page:

  • declares its language, so screen readers pronounce it correctly;
  • labels every control, and links each answer field to its question;
  • announces status changes and errors to screen readers;
  • uses standard dialogs that keyboard and screen-reader users can operate.

The website:

  • has a skip link to the main content and a heading structure on every page;
  • labels every form field;
  • uses text and background colors chosen to meet WCAG AA contrast, in light and dark mode;
  • turns off its scroll animations for visitors who have asked their device to reduce motion.

3. Accommodations

Instructors can give an individual student more time on a timed lab (from 5 to 240 minutes), more attempts, or an exemption from a lab's network restriction, from the course's Clearbyte dashboard.

4. Known limits

  • Lab instructions are written by each instructor, so their accessibility (for example, alt text on images and the structure of headings) depends on the author.
  • Students do most lab work in the AWS Management Console, which is provided by AWS, not Clearbyte. AWS publishes accessibility information and conformance reports for its services on its AWS Accessibility page.
  • The lab platform has not yet been tested with screen readers.

5. Reporting a problem

To report an accessibility problem or ask for information in another format, email info@clearbyte.com with the page and what happened. Reports are answered within five business days.
